How Often Should I Get A Massage?

There’s no question about it, studies have shown that massage has a long list of benefits. Getting a massage is a great way to unwind, relax, or address back pain. Thanks to the vast options you have in the marketplace, you can find a massage therapist nearly anywhere you live. Even if you can’t order a massage, you can self-massage or ask someone close to you to perform massage techniques at home. If you don’t have anyone, you can always book a massage with a service like Soothe, they do in home massage so you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home.

Now that you know you don’t have to leave home to get a massage, it brings up a valid question: “how many times should I be getting a massage?” The experts agree that there’s no one standard or guidelines for the number of massages you can get. With that being said, you do need to speak with your massage therapist or personal doctor first as they could be reasons why you shouldn’t get a regular massage.

What Would Be The Best Option?

It all depends on your unique situation. If you’re just getting a massage to unwind and relax, these can be left often. On the other hand, if your getting a massage over injuries, you may need massage therapy sessions a few times a month. For many of you, it’s going to be all about your preference. If you’re completely healthy and want to get a massage once a week, go for it! If you have medical conditions, consult your doctor first.

Another thing you need to keep in mind as it pertains to how often and long you’re going to get massaged; and that is the “type” of massage you’re planning to get. Many research studies recommend a certain massage frequency and duration to address underlying health problems like pain or injury. This is especially true for those of you that may have chronic conditions. Again, be sure you speak up and talk to your doctor. They know your conditions and health, ask them how many times you can get a massage, be sure to ask about the duration also.

There’s a long list of different massages you can get;

  • Swedish massage – this massage is gentle, it focuses on relaxation and relieving stress
  • Deep tissue massage – this massage applies firm pressure, usually recommended for those that have neck pain or back pain
  • Sports massage – this massage uses different techniques, a good choice for those of you that may have current or past injuries

If your doctor approves getting a massage, you can then talk to a massage therapist to find out how often you should visit to address your specific needs.

Lastly, let’s discuss massage duration. Massage therapy sessions will generally last 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 90 minutes. If you’re going to be going to a professional massage therapist, we’d recommend starting with the 30 minute session. It’s normal to be sore after your first professional massage, so if your skin is sensitive, you may want to choose a 30 minute massage. Since the Swedish massage is gentle, you may also want to keep that on your radar.

You know how your body feels, if you can handle a full 60 minute or 90 minute massage, do it. If you’re not sure, take it slow and easy, book a 30 minute session and see how it goes. If you don’t have any trouble, you can always book another massage therapy session.
